This hand-lettering postcard design is based off of the phrase, ‘once in a blue moon.’ I began by researching the history of the saying, which dates back to the 16th century. I tested a variety of design directions through the sketches shown below. I struggled with the shape of the o’s in moon, but was able to find a solution through sketch iterations. 

The final product effectively represents the origins and meaning of the saying through symbolism and color. Events that happen ‘once in a blue moon’ occur every 2 to 3 years, which is why I chose to include 2 moons as the ‘o’s’ and 1 small moon as the ‘c.’
